Topic: idea for physical hole making

hi guys

inspired by parasti, today I thought of this physical hole. I posted it because I thought it might help one of you mappers have an idea or something! smile

thread/post I am thinking of : here (it is post #46)

ps now that KodeBreaker is done asking mapping questions for now, it is kinda sad... sad  KodeBreaker is a good new mapper good for stirring up activity on the forum, which he did smile    His thread that I linked to is what led parasti to make his/her original gif image!

pps oh almost forgot: as I have said b4, I am using at the moment gtk radiant and not net radiant. Mean to switch to net radiant when I get around to it

ppps also 4got: at some early point in the gif I forgot to say I ch'd to grid 8. Throughout the gif the grid goes: 16 > 8 > 1.

Re: idea for physical hole making

why did this thread become sticky?

If it is sticky, I think it would be important to remember parasti's post that I linked to above because his/her post is what caused idea. Also as I said I think the gif that parasti posted could go in the Neverball mapping documentation, maybe in "editing recommendations". I think this way shown by parasti of making a hole is sort of "official". It helps avoid t-intersections (and maybe other things). I remember at some point ht-never posted a physical hole making method, which looked with good geometry in-game but involved overlapping brushes. It also gave a lil less flexibility in texturing.

anyway glad you guys like my hole making idea smile

EDIT: here is physical hole by ht-never: here on waybackmachine on old neverwiki

Re: idea for physical hole making

I made it sticky. It's a pretty creative mapping tip (and you already included a link to my post). Really wish more people shared their mapping tips on here, with images, animated or not. It's a powerful way of quickly explaining techniques and concepts to mappers who are just starting out.

agreed          actually once again you were the only reason I thought to post an image at all!

Speaking of ideas, I thought that this hole making method would allow you to make something like a block of Swiss cheese. smile tongue

Re: idea for physical hole making

Hey guys

Today I thought of a way to manually make a sphere. Once again there is a .gif. Then there are 2 bonus pics

the gif: in the pic with the red right triangle: When you x-axis rotate the green circle in the .gif, the outer radius becomes the apothem of the gray circle. (The gray circle is the waistline outline for the final sphere.) So this means getting C accurate is important if you want a perfect sphere. You can probably get C more accurate with math than by rotating the apothem of the triangle onto the vertical grid line and measuring it (which is what I did tongue ).

xtra pic 1: These are 2 unintended things that I got. The gray waistline is where the green brushes overflowed a bit past the desired sphere radius (128units) when I CSG subtracted them asin the .gif. This happened b/c I got the "outer radius" parameter for curve 3 (the green circle) from the .gif a bit off. I am not sure if the invisible texture peeking happened b/c of this parameter. Maybe you could try to fix both unintended things?  (Btw b/c of the invisible texture shimmering, the sphere could not be CSG merged into one brush! yikes )

xtra pic 2: To get the left thn I CSG hollowed the sphere with grid 8. Then I clipper split and inverted top portion. To get the right thn I CSG subtracted with a shrunk duplicate sphere. Then I clipper split and inverted top portion.

I hope this gif gives you ideas for new maps etc smile

EDIT: 4got: In the gif the two CSG subtract pics have a *. *: You might have to press CSG subtract more than once, say twice, to remove any xtra fragments.

Re: idea for physical hole making

Interesting. Could be helpful in some scenarios. Just to remind anyone reading this, you can also get a sphere by simply using Brush -> Sphere on a lump.

BTW, a couple of tips on image attachments:

  • If you make your image less than 600px wide, PunBB will display it inline.

  • You should use the .jpg extension for JPEG files. You are using .jpeg, which PunBB does not recognize as an image and makes everyone download the image file. Alternatively, just use PNG for screenshots, because JPEG compression is more suited for real-world images.

Re: idea for physical hole making

I guess that is netradiant? In gtkradiant I could only get a 7-sided kinda crappy sphere with the built-in tool. That is partially why I tried to manually make a sphere. Another reason for me to get around to netradiant b4 too long tongue

EDIT: also until now I thought that maybe the sphere in the bigball-old neverball misc lvl and the big clear sphere in Ervin's lvls were imported from some program like Blender or something.

Re: idea for physical hole making

You guys are saving neverball!  it makes me so happy!

When I first installed linux way back in the day, this was the first 3D game I ever got to work, and that is why I am so attached to it.  smile

actually, I only started this thread because of post by parasti linked to at top, and his/her post was because of KodeBreaker's thread, and KodeBreaker is a beginnning mapper, and as I mentioned in this thread, the main activity that seems to stir up activity from we older people/not-beginner-mappers is from beginnning mappers. So KodeBreaker is the main one! tongue

EDIT offtopic: Also for a while I have thought that maybe the snowman in TDF and some other complicated shapes were imported from some program like Blender or something. Is this right?

Re: idea for physical hole making

hey guys

today I made this gif which shows another shape. This time you use a cone (I made it with the tool in radiant). This time the clips that go around the carved section each have 3 points. not much else to say abt this gif off the top of my head. Also I am not really sure what you might use this shape for tongue

bonus: in the end you can get a cheap Companion Cube by adding a cube, csg subtracting (shift+u), and adding some hearts. Maybe you can try making another Companion Cube?

also: maybe you can try doing more csg merge (ctrl+u) on the hollow cube thing? to save brushes?

Re: idea for physical hole making

i would not have thought of any of these gif's if it were not for the one you did in KodeBreaker's thread smile tongue

KodeBreaker is a new mapper, and as I said in my "decade approaching" thread, it seems that the major stirrer upper of activity on this forum is new mappers.   it's happening !       Also mapping questions from new mappers seem to help a lot

I remember there used to be a Companion Cube emojikon in the old days of this forum. I wonder if people will be making new NeverCompanionCubes? Maybe other Portal cubes?

All 3 of you...  and more!

You and parasti have both been essential components of what is bringing the game back to life.  KodeBreaker (and others)  are the result.  He is adding to the game as a new contributor, but not without the help that both of you have provided.
