Topic: Can I change the backround?

I don't like how when you are stuck on a level you always have the same back round!

It's sickening...

Re: Can I change the backround?

What I hate is when you're stuck on a level and it's always the same level.

Re: Can I change the backround?

Me too.

You can turn it "OFF" in the menu, though. [To actually give some help. I always liked about this forum that people were almost too polite and there was no newb-bashing, even if the questions were the same ones all over again. Also, it has entertainment value.]

Re: Can I change the backround?

Yeah but dose anyone know how to CHANGE it?

Re: Can I change the backround?

Backgounds can be changed in the levels.txt file, if memory serves...

Due to the new variables in GtkRadiant now, the info may be compiled into the map... You can always edit the levelname.map in GtkRadiant, and change the universal variable (worldspawn). Then recompile the map with mapc(.exe) levelname.map data

Best of luck...

Re: Can I change the backround?

If you open the xxx.map file (found in the set's "map-xxx" folder) with a text editor you will see something like this at the head of the file:

// entity 0
{
"classname" "worldspawn"
"author" "Mehdi Yousfi-Monod"
"version" "1"
"back" "map-back/alien.sol"
"grad" "back/alien.png"
"shot" "shot-mym/assault.jpg"
"song" "bgm/track5.ogg"
"time" "12000"
"goal" "100"
"time_hs" "3000 3500"
"goal_hs" "3200 3700"
"coin_hs" "146 120"
"message" "Le parcours du combattant.\Ready for the assault course?"

just change the "back" and "grad" values to match the background which you want to play that level in.
Then you will need to compile that level again using mapc to create a new .sol file.
Be sure that when you save the .map file you retain the extension and don't add any .txt after it or anything.

You'll need to refer to the wiki for instructions on how to use mapc from the command line. It's not that hard but will just take a little reading and some care.

Hope this helps, have fun!

Re: Can I change the backround?

I've changed all the backgrounds to ones which I thought suited the level better.
Particularly for Mehdi's levels. wink

I would be interested in having a look at your changes :-)
The choice of background has to take into account color fitting with level's textures, so changing the background may required applying different textures in the level.
Also, in 1.5, I followed the rule of having one environment per 5 levels (a row) in order to keep the partition of a set into 5 uniform worlds.

I use macintosh.

You can still use GtkRadiant, and TextEdit big_smile

Sure. Do you want me to upload my versions to the forum in a zipped folder?
I changed the majority of the backgrounds back to the way they were back in v1.4.0 (mainly for nostalgic reasons). And I also replaced some others with the volcano background because it's only used in 5 levels in the entire game, and it's such a nice background too. It's a pity we don't have more levels that make use of this background.

I think a mail with zipped (targzed/tarbzipped) map files would be nice.
I just want to give it a try, I think for the same reasons than yours ;-)

I agree. The reason is this background came very late.
Maybe I could set it to one or 2 rows of my sets.

Re: Can I change the backround?

I don't understand!  Where do I find map-xxx

15

Re: Can I change the backround?

Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Neverball Data/data/map-xxx

16

Re: Can I change the backround?

Map-xxx is not in data! I'm getting frustrated!  mad

17

Re: Can I change the backround?

map-xxx is supposed to be a sub-folder of /data, and xxx is the name of the maps. Eg., map-mym, map-mym2, ... And in this folder, you find many *.map files which correspond one to one to the levels in the respective set.

You can find many further details in the wiki (link on top of this page), in the pages describing mapping / level editing.

Re: Can I change the backround?

I do not see it...
                           ;(

19

Re: Can I change the backround?

But you do see the data folder? What is in your data folder then?

20

Re: Can I change the backround?

Map-cck, Map -mym, map mym2. etc.  neutral

21

Re: Can I change the backround?

Yeah, so those are all folders, right? Inside each folder, there are several files ending with ".map". Those correspond to levels in the game.

Consult the wiki on how to change the background in the .map files, and how to compile the .map files using the mapc application which comes with NB. Good luck! big_smile

22

Re: Can I change the backround?

What word corasponds to each background

23

Re: Can I change the backround?

Eg. in map-easy/bumper.map , you have

...
"back" "map-back/city.sol"
...

so the background is the city.

In data/set-easy.txt , you have all the levels that make up the easy set. bumper.sol shows up as the 11th level file, therefore you can check what background "city.sol" corresponds to in the game if you play the 11th level of the easy set. Have fun!

Re: Can I change the backround?

It doesn't work. It won't let me save...

25

Re: Can I change the backround?

Try saving it in the user directory. Then compile it with mapc.

As the folder starts with a period, Mac systems hide them by default.

This quotation I originally wrote is probably out-of-date, but it might still work.
