Topic: Favourite levels

I was really astonished to discover that you have no *favourite levels* thread so far. Each game forum needs a favourite unit/race/weapon/whatever thread. So here it is big_smile
You may post the least favourite levels as well ^^

Here ist my list:
Easy:
favourite: IV, 17 (I like maces)
least favourite: 9 (I hate being kicked around)

Medium:
favourite: 20 (of course), V, III (grow/shrink was a really good idea)
least favourite: 6 (this is really annoying)

Hard:
favourite: V (more puzzle levels please), 12, 19
least favourite: 4 (this is supposed to be annoying, right?), 20 (can't you switch 19 and 20 for a much more exciting final level? ^^)

TdF:
favourite: 13 (so beautiful), 3,17 (I like this sort of time pressure), 20 (once you made it... )
least favourite: 10 (my most hated level overall), 11
disappointing: III (I just expected more challenge for a mehdi set bonus level)
dont know but I have to mention it: 14 (assault course was the biggest pain ever but I recently noticed how damn easy it actually is...)

RdF:
favourite: 17, 19 (pure fun) ,20, 12
least favourite: 14 (the damn cone - when do you implement the skipping ? ^^)

Nevermania:
favourite: 5 (just brilliant), 16 (even better)
least favourite: I have not played it enough to strongly dislike one of the levels, but 7 and 9 stand a good chance ^^

Ps: The  proposals I made here are not to be taken too seriously big_smile

Re: Favourite levels

Cool! Here's my feedback:

Neverball Easy:

1st Favourite: Level 12 (this level looks cool, and I especially enjoy mazes! big_smile)
2nd Favourite: Level IV (I love Pac-Man!)
3rd Favourite: Level 13 (halfpipes are really fun tongue)
Least Favourite: Level 14 (it's a bit hard to see with all the coins in the way)

Neverball Medium:

1st Favourite: Level 2 (this level is so well-designed, plus I enjoy the switches smile)
2nd Favourite: Level V (this is a great maze level, with a good concept cool)
3rd Favourite: Level III (my favourite level for growing and shrinking)
Least Favourite: Level 16 (this level really gets on my nerves! D:)

Neverball Hard:

1st Favourite: Level V (this level is fun tongue)
2nd Favourite: Level 19 (I like levels where you get to choose which route to take smile)
3rd Favourite: Level 5 (I just find this level cool cool)
Least Favourite: Level 12 (I find the concept of this level a bit complex hmm)

Tour de Force:

1st Favourite: Level 13 (this level looks wonderful. ^^ Great work mym!)
2nd Favourite: Level 18 (I like levels where you get to move around a lot smile)
3rd Favourite: Level V (this level is so extreme! cool)
Least Favourite: Level 10 (very frustrating! I think the things are moving too fast D:)

Retour de Force:

1st Favourite: Level 5 (pure fun ^^)
2nd Favourite: Level II (looks spectacular, but it would be better if the rainbow was more gradient hmm)
3rd Favourite: Level 19 (also pure fun! big_smile)
Least Favourite: Level 14 (this level is insane mad)

Nevermania:

1st Favourite: Level 7 (I like 'extreme' levels cool)
2nd Favourite: Level 15 (pure cool cool)
3rd Favourite: Level 16 (highly detailed, it just runs a bit slow on my computer though)
Least Favourite: Level 4 (the most boring level in the set neutral)

The reason is nostalgia.
I can understand such levels look misplaced and too easy, That's why they are bonus levels instead of normal ones.

Re: Favourite levels

Mym, why did you move the level 'bombman' from Tour de Force to Retour de Force?
It was in Mehdi's Levels in 1.4.0, but in 1.5 it's in Retour de Force.
And also, for Tour de Force, a lot of the backgrounds suited most of the levels better in 1.4.0.

5

Re: Favourite levels

Thx SJ for your suggestions.

However moving levels in a set or across sets is not easy.
I try to keep a fair difficulty curve.
Backgrounds are also order dependant as each belongs to an environment and we try to stick to one env per row for uniformity sakes.
It's like whole worlds (as in Super Mario Bros) the player has to finish before moving to the next one.
World of the hills, of the ocean, of the space...

It was hard to move bombman to RdF as it originally belongs to the first and old set, but "Ghosts Valley" could not be put into RdF... and I have to keep 25 levels per set ^^
However this is only bothering for historical reasons, this is (I think) not a matter of gameplay, which is IMHO more important.

Another point is the order constancy between major versions of the game: I think we should prevent order changes.
Level indexes of 1.5.x are IDs players and contributors use to refer them.

I hope my explanations are clear smile

Re: Favourite levels

Yes, I understand that the environment backgrounds need to be the same for each row. smile
It's just for example TDF Level 6 used to have the city background in 1.4.0.
It gave the level a scary effect which made the level fun. tongue
But now that it has the hills background, it has lost its feel. sad

Also, I think it's about time someone created a new environment background.
Something that is way different to the others.
A jungle, castle, volcano or cave background are some ideas that I quite like! big_smile

7

Re: Favourite levels

Yeah what about the volcano background *bump* ?

8

Re: Favourite levels

Funny you should mention it, as I'm in the middle of merging that.  These past few days I've been struggling with the problem that causes z-fighting in "frogger" when the volcano background is used.  (I intend to post about my findings later.)

I fully agree.
I had the same disappointment for this level, but I was not able to find a coherent solution.

BTW, what's your opinion about levels that breaks the difficulty curve?
For example Easy 5 or RdF 15? (in such cases the "break" offers an easier level)
I like the concept, but I think it shouldn't occur too often.
Moving the invisible level to the city env (one env forward) would imply such an easy break.

Re: Favourite levels

mym wrote:

I think levels like these should be bonus levels. For RDF Lv15, I think you should at least get some coins, otherwise you can complete it without the need to push any keys. I also think that this level should've been Bonus Level IV, rather than the shaker level.

nue wrote:

If this background was included in the next version of Neverball, would there need to be 30 levels in a set? hmm

I will guess, that they will use the volcano background on the bonus levels.. smile

Has a track6.ogg been made to accompany the volcanoes background?

glad you tried them out. the original idea was 1) to create a kind of introduction to freestyle play (leading up to Dave's levels) and 2) expose aspects of the game that didn't exist in 1.4 (i.e. learning to control flying through the air, running away from things, novelty playing surfaces, forced ball movement, hidden coins, etc.).  "novelty" was definitely the key concept.

seeing as i had to abandon them before they even made it to the beta stage (in fact, even before we had a svn repository - funny to think about how Dave and tones "created" the textures for their own levels and we had to actually send them to each other), i should give credit where it's due: tonesfrommars did a fantastic job with hard 19 and mym made billiards look amazing (the geometry was insane for the pockets) - i'm honored that all 8 of my levels somehow found a way into the 1.5 release (2 actually in game!). I do however miss my old version of thwomp2 with the creepy "haunted house" wood and the face on all sides of the thwomp (much more menacing in my opinion), but that's just me.

i should make my own fav list...

It's a taste i have acquired.

Reason for getting rid of the thwomp was simple:  no thwomps in the three standard sets, they're first introduced in Tour de Force.  I doubt there's anyone who really believes the level got better by removing the thwomp...
