Topic: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

Added 101 freeware games from ThePirateBay Bundle...

Available here -> http://kickass.to/usearch/thepiratebaybundle.moshboy/

WOWZA WOWZA: Just discovered that my favourite multiplayer ball-collecting combat flight-sim, Clusterball, has been hacked to work under Win7-64bit and also has working servers. More news and links shortly. http://www.freeware.de/download/cluster … _5893.html .I have it working under Win7-64bit, and offline training is a bit iffy, but online play seems to work fine. Try not to use 32bit graphics at high res... it does not seem to like it. I use 16bit at 1920x1080@60Hz, and it's great.

Here is my quick list of Freeware/Open Source games in order of my preference.

Almost all are available and run in WindowsXP. a few are Linux only, and most are available on multiple platforms. The list will *NEVER* include Battle for Wesnoth or Frozen Bubble. This is just a personal preference, and any flames will be ignored.

If you have any games I have omitted, please reply with the name, and possibly a URL to a download page, so I can test it :D

NOTE: This list is old, and many links are dead. A Google search should yield a usable download. Links will be updated shortly.

Home Page/Download URLs will be updated shortly...Until then, you can use Google to find them  :)

EDIT: WELCOME BACK HOME OF THE UNDERDOGS - all links and downloads back up!!!

As I said - not complete at all, please help expand and complete the list (except for Wesnoth & Bubble). There are also some borderline games that can be dropped in preference for missing ones! I also have all Kenta Cho's abstract shooters listed separately - this makes up about 1/20th of the list (or more). It may be better to list a few, and supply the main english URL?

I lost my database file for these games - so I am relying on this existing list as a starting point... :(

EDIT: Adding even more URLs to homepages/downloads - will add platforms supported after URLs
EDIT: Replaced FuHQuake with EZQuake
EDIT: Added SuperTux and World of Goo Demo. Removed Anagramarama and XWars
EDIT: Finished 73 URLs.
EDIT: Replaced Racer with Chromium BSU - Added Mupen64+ for Linux, runs SuperMario64 perfectly!!!
EDIT: Fixed Gravitron URL
EDIT: Added FLaiL and Titanion, fixed some links and added more OS X links.
EDIT: Removed HOTU link - what a shame, I will miss them...
EDIT: Added HOTU link - HUZZAH!!!
EDIT: Added links down to 84 - sorry for the wait!
EDIT: Added 101 games from tpb bundle.
NOTE: I will update this list shortly
UPDATE: Holy Schmoly, just discovered GameJolt -- more indie games to come!
UPDATE: Working Clusterball found. will update soon.

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

Thanks CSY - don't know how I forgot LBreakout2!!

I was thinking of including Bastet, but I believe that only runs on Linux consoles... a bit restrictive, but a great idea (with a good algorithm).

Some of these games I have never played, including Soldat, Glaxium, SWINE, Free Tennis, Allegiance, TORCS...

If anyone knows of a Windows build of Free Tennis, let me know please!

bah....can't append anything to it...there's already the games i play (nexuiz, arma, neverball and tremulous)

Supertux.  The latest official release is pretty good, but I was blown away by the in-development stuff.

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

New games now in the list, and all new rankings to reflect my preferences, almost all top 25 are played by me regularly. 25-50 have been played, and are well liked. 50-100 are really just filling in space, and are not in any order of preference.

I should also add Bastet, the fiendish tetris game that always gives you the worst piece... great algorithm...

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

Sadly, you guys have completely forgotten the greatest game of all (excepting Neverball, of course wink)! Quadnet! Which can be acquired at this location here! And to be doubly sure that you can enjoy this great game I highly recommend that you grab DOSBox.

Which is good... because you linux-heads are able to use DOSBox to play DOS games. So everyone wins!! DOSBox is easy to setup and use (at least in Windows). Edit::The site has easy to find info on setting it all up. Links on the front page.

TIPS: Make sure you hit Alt-Enter to go fullscreen and I'd recommend that you configure your controls in-game. I use WASD for movement and the arrow keys to fire in all directions. Takes a bit to get used to at first, but it won't take long to see how cool this game really is.

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

If you use Mac OS X this is probably a bit easier to use that DOSBox:

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

You're on a roll powbam, this game looks interesting. There was a similar tank against tank game on older Macs that used vector graphics (quadrinet? tetrinet?). It was bloody near perfect, only beaten by Arashi (Tempest clone) for the old Macs.

Geometry Wars for Vista/XBLA (Crap - ony $3.95US) has brought back vector graphics as a still viable alternative to flashy graphics. There is a hacked version online that works with WinXP (albeit at a very low resolution).

Off Topic: See Darwinia, Multiwinia and Defcon (all from Introversion) for more current commercial examples of simplistic graphics used to great effect!

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

smile Yea... I discovered Quadnet several years back and fell in love with it... simple games like that just have that pull. I have Geometry Wars on PC thru Steam and that's about the price I paid... but I went and got it for the kids on Wii also. Crazy good game.

BTW :: Did you get around to playing BlockBall Evolution?

Also, do you know of any Tempest clones for PC? I used to play Nitrous Oxide on PS1. Such a great game!

13

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

There is a nice updated Tempest, called Tempest 2000 I believe (may be 3000).

I actually play the original in MAME32, so that would be the most accurate Tempest clone wink

I have not found a satisfactory clone as good as Arashi was on the Mac sad

Yes, I played it last night. This type of game really comes off flat to me, guess I am just used to the best ball/physics game out there - called Neverball big_smile

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

How come Chromium BSU isn't on the list? I love that game.

I find Qrbit fairly enjoyable (it's an orbital/space flight simulator). It's MacOS only though.

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

I love Chromium BSU as well, I cannot believe I overlooked it - I shall squeeze it in there somewhere.

I have not played Qrbit at all, could you use a snapshot program wink and email me some good ideas of what the program runs like - and maybe a short synopsis of gameplay. This would of course break the list, as I claim to have play-tested all games on it. Maybe I could add an asterisk (*=unplayed).

Thanks for the heads up! and happy new year to you all!

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

It's on VT.

It doesn't look very pretty, and it's pretty simple. It's not the sort of game I'd expect everybody to rave about; I just enjoy the gameplay.

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

Oh dear. The developers are long gone, and the last officially supported OS was 10.2. There is also feedback on the forum that states that it does not work in 10.3.

Under these conditions, I would have to say that it does not meet the exacting criteria that I require for inclusion in my list (actually, I discovered that Planet Penguin Racer was also dead - although the community is still keeping it on life support through software repositories). If a new fansite appeared, and it was compatible with OS X 10.4.5 - 10.5.x, I would certainly include it, as it has received very positive feedback on VersionTracker. 4.7 out of 5.0 overall is a bloody good score. Let me see if I can find a place for it.

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

It worked for me under 10.4 last time I checked, and I'm convinced I had it running under 10.3. I wasn't saying that it was necessarily suitable for your list. I just like it lol. It's not even open source anyway is it?

Chromium BSU deserves to be there though. That's a really nicely done top scrolling shooter with a Mad Wicked Metal™ soundtrack. It can be found here and here.
Regardless of how long it may have been since the last release, this game still has a level of polish that people would usually associate with commercial endeavours, and so I believe it probably has a place in your list (plus there seems to be some recent sourceforge activity).

Agreed, now on the list...

I will leave Qrbit for the time being, in case the software is updated sometime, a bit iffy - although the synopsis sounds sweet.

Chromium apparently builds under MacOS, though I've not been able to find a DMG and I haven't got time to try it myself.

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

When I try chromium on macports, it runs smoothly but with no sound and some bugs on powerups which displays as white squares... The sound problem is probably due to openal, but I didn't dig deeper to solve it.

Re: Top 206 Freeware/Open Source Games

Thanks for the info Shino, I only added Mac as a supported platform, I didn't supply the macports link. There may be a better version through Fink.

Fink sux... Never had any luck with it. And even if there is a Fink port, there's probably a MacPort which works just as good, or better.
