Topic: SMB-like games

Here are 3 Windows games I don't have tried, but they seem to be close to Neverball:
Hamsterball: http://www.raptisoft.com/hamsterball.shtml
Super GerBall: http://www.supergerball.com/
I've got some BALLS: http://www.saunalahti.fi/sebbi/shatter/ballseng.htm

Could someone (using Windows...) try these games and give us some feedback about differences with our game ?

Re: SMB-like games

I've just tried demo versions of those 3 games :
HamsterBall is really neat ! A clone of marble madness more than SMB but very pro, great design, great graphics, great sound, a really good game !
SuperGerBall is not as better as HamsterBall and trial version is very short. It's more a clone of SMB but it's got less style, graphics are not so good and gameplay is not awesome.
The last one is very strange, levels are unclear and gameplay seems very bad, and it's abandonware already...

wink

Re: SMB-like games

OK, now for some quick reviews...

I've got some BALLS:
Promising concept that never really works. Some interesting ideas and layouts, but no world tilt, and no ball - more of a sliding hockey puck. Not worth the download...

http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/3969/284061045759sx.th.png

Super GerBall:
Some interesting layouts, and almost a complete take-off on Super Monkey Ball. Camera angles are troublesome, and seems to be aimed at younger children, due to easy layouts. Closest clone to SMB so far discovered - complete with the whacky voice at the start. Level editor included...

http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/7826/284061322225dj.th.jpg

3D Stress Ball:
Probably the most similar to Neverball, but 1/10th the speed. There is a Flash version of this game, and the full version runs so slowly, it may be programmed in Flash as well!! Level Editor included...Avoid like the plague!!!

http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/6237/28406274188thumb3ye.jpg

Hamsterball
Easily the best game amongst these. Highly polished, with new multiplayer games now available. No level editor, and only around 12 levels, but they are very large, very beautiful, and now have hidden secrets too... Good music, Great graphics, and addictive gameplay - the Commercial Neverball!! Try it out!

http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/5703/284064434320sv.th.jpg

Marble Blast Gold
A fun little diversion, with some great looking levels (and a whole lot of them!). Powerups aplenty, and all round a decent game in its own right (but its no Hamsterball!). Level Editor available, and many user created levels, and a thriving user community. GarageGames is on a winner here, as with its addictive Orbz games...

http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/5497/284064943216gz.th.jpg

Ballance
More of a puzzler, but in full 3D, ala Neverball. Limited camera motion, and keyboard controls, but the most spectacular graphics of all games mentioned (or any game for that matter), and brilliant sounds and music. Doesn't command replays like Neverball, due to lengthy stages... and not many of them. There is a new Level13 available at the link above, for those with the full game...

http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/7261/284065223350jq.th.jpg

Best Friends
A fun little game for kids, with very dynamic levels, that look a lot like Neverball, and some which are downright SMB rip-offs... Definitely worth looking at for level design and power-up ideas.

http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/5764/284065657363av.th.jpg

I-Ninja
Contains levels almost identical to SMB. See screenshot...

http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/3056/ininja6kc.th.jpg

GooBall
Mac only clone, looks a little on the surreal side...

Re: SMB-like games

Thx Shino and themacmeister for your reviews.
I've just tried Hamster Ball. Indeed it is nice and well polished, with some really fun 2 player modes.
However, it is not a Neverball-like game as you control the ball and not the floor.
I do not have the same sensations with Hamster Ball as in Neverball.

Re: SMB-like games

As I said it's a marble-madness-like game, not a SMB-like game wink

Re: SMB-like games

There is precious little difference in my opinion. 3D levels, start and goal and timer. The only real difference is different fallout rules, and world tilt/controls are different.

You are still a furry animal inside a ball! You cannot get much closer to SMB than that smile

And Hamsterball is a really fun game... which is the important thing.

The tilt/controls differences are really important, they change the gameplay a lot.
Moreover, the utlra-realistic dynamics of Neverball make this game unique in my opinion.
I think none of the existing games can provide me the same feeling than Neverball do.
The Neverball's control is harder to learn, but once you got it, you enjoy more than other games.

Re: SMB-like games

You are correct...

Ballance has perfect physics, but is a puzzle game, not an arcade/action game like Neverball.

Thx themacmeister, it's a good think to have a look at some SMB-like games, and nice short reviews.
Just a disagreement concerning HamsterBall: I've tested it some months ago and I do not agree it's a pure Neverball like so I couldn't call it "the Commercial Neverball". In this game, you control the ball, not the floor and I think it's an important difference.

PS: wow, you've just reached the rank of "Hardcore Neverballer" big_smile

Re: SMB-like games

These games are probably not as cool as neverball strictly speaking, but I have to say I am looking forward
to building myself a PC so I can play Ballance and Hamsterball. They look to be lots of fun.
thanks for those shots, themacmeister.

Re: SMB-like games

I believe these games (mostly commercial games) show the gulf between simplicity of design and gameplay, and the efforts which commercial designers put into "prettying up" their games.

If it wasn't for the prefs editing required for Neverball/Neverputt I believe it would be the perfect game...

I've finish all the maps of this game and he is good, but not as good as nvball.. the nigtmare lvl is REEEALLY hard. (more than M25 !) the difference is that you don't tilt the floor but you push the ball. The graphics and the physics are a little bit dirty, but playable. The cam is always lazy and it is sometimes painful.  I'm ready to share/compare my BTimes if someone else is interested.

comment trouver le temps de travailler maintenant?

I tried this game once, but I didn't like it very much.... I haven't tried for long though...
